About Brittany Steckel

I was always a friend that people came to for emotional support and encouragement. My friends knew that I would listen to them and provide a safe space for them to be heard. By providing that space in the chaos of their lives, my friends were able to navigate difficult times while continuing to feel connected to people who cared for them.

After years of supporting my close friends, I decided to be trained to be a professional counselor. I took steps to seek my own counseling and develop myself as a person, spouse, and friend. Through professional and personal growth, I became equipped to help my clients feel seen and supported, and help guide them through some of the hardest times in their lives.

People do not thrive alone, and my passion is to help people grow within their relationships so that they can not only survive what life throws at them, but truly thrive. As I’ve found in my work, thriving comes from being grounded in really knowing your own heart and mind, and creating lasting deep connections to the people closest to around you.

Education, Training, and Certifications

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Colorado. I received my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Denver Seminary and completed a two year program specializing in Marriage and Family Therapy at Denver Family Institute.

Within my counseling journey, I have worked in in-patient settings, addiction treatment centers, and group practices. However, my drive to work with people within their relationships drove me to pursue private practice.

I have received specialized trainings around cultural diversity, LGBTQIA+ populations, addiction, neurodiversity, incorporating spirituality into the counseling room, and a lot of specialized training around working with couples. I am certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy with couples (EFCT) and completed Level 1 in Internal Family Systems (IFS). Additionally, I am a certified facilitator in two premarital programs: Save Your Marriage Before it Starts (SYMBIS) and Prepare and Enrich.

In Counseling with Brittany

In counseling with me, you will first be be equipped with some communication skills, and practice conversational and listening skills in session. This will form a foundation of communication that will help us to start understanding long-standing patterns in conflict and understand some of the hidden stories and emotions that are reinforcing stuck-points in your relationships and patterns that emerge when in conflict with one another.

You will also have some fun as a couple or family. I will occasionally utilize activities and games in session to solidify communication practices and help people engage with laughter and joy (a core aspect of healthy relationships). Along the way, your relationships will become stronger and deeper as we develop and build upon what makes your relationship special.

Outside of the Counseling Room

I am a natural learner and adventurer. During my time away from the office, I am an avid reader and love finding new ways to express myself in art and music. The mountains are where I feel most at home, and I love getting outside and going on adventures by myself or with my husband. I am married to a fellow counselor and enjoy times of nerding out about theories of counseling and different trainings with him. Lastly, I enjoy quality time with my friends and family, playing board games, catching up over coffee, and soaking up the feeling of community.

Rock that Relationship!

S5. Episode 3: The Honeymoon Phase with Brittany Steckel

What is the honeymoon phase exactly? We meet that new person, fall head over heels, and float in bliss…for a few months, perhaps. Then, real life sets in. Join us as we talk with individual and couples’ counselor, Brittany Steckel, about what happens to our bodies and minds at the beginning of a relationship, how attachment styles might impact how we transition into the post-honeymoon phase, and the role of novelty in keeping the spark. Tracy shares how she values a growth mindset in a partner where deep conversations, even on day one, can help them learn about themselves and each other. Corey’s less organic tactic, instead resembling a well-orchestrated lesson plan on emotional intelligence, shows up as conversations about the day’s “highlights and lowlights” over dinner every night. Regardless of how they go about it, both believe that establishing an emotional depth at the onset is what can make a relationship loving and sustainable well after the honeymoon phase ends.
